İsviçre, 1942: Almanya'da şarkıcı olarak kariyer yapma umuduyla yola çıkan fakir serseri Ernst Schrämli, geçimini sağlamak amacıyla İsviçre askeri bilgilerini bir Nazi casusuna satmaya başlar. Ancak büyük bir hatanın eşiğinde olduğunu henüz bilmemektedir. Ernst'in bu tehlikeli hareketi, onun barındırdığı naif ve masum hayallerle tezat bir durum oluşturur. Zamanla, işlediği suç ortaya çıktığında, hayatını tamamen değiştirecek olaylar zinciri başlar. Bu olaylar, Ernst'in hem içsel hem de dışsal bir mücadeleye girmesine neden olacak ve onun karakterinin derinliklerine bir yolculuk yapmamıza olanak tanıyacak. Film, savaşın gölgesinde bireysel hırs ve moral çatışmalarını ele alırken, aynı zamanda izleyiciye tarihin karanlık dönemlerine dair çarpıcı bir bakış açısı sunuyor.
